After a marvelous spring display, starts to disappear in the summer heat, often dormant/deciduous during all of late summer. An interesting native with a medicinal reputation, quite fabulous as emerges in the early spring; but due to early summer dormancy this native is more a botanical than horticultural wonder; never happy containerized.

Their extreme vertical aspect makes them a decorative must for shallow pool/bog designs; while their primitive aspect makes them a favorite in very contemporary garden designs--especially as is quite evergreen, persisting all winter if not exposed to excessive windtunnel conditions.

81868 FALLOPIA JAPONICUM TRICOLOR POLYG HT HH PRICE: $ 6.75 Yinger introduced this to our gardens (and we will never be able to forget): a quite remarkable clumping (sometimes wandering) member of the Buckwheats with new growth emerging coral in the spring to reach a five foot stature with leaves boldly splashed white, brilliant pink, bronze-green and emerald much valued for Ikebana. The emerging fat bronzy pink stalks in the spring are among the most astounding sight in the world of decorative horticulture--every year visitors to the gardens here take endless photos of this phenomenon of seemingly giant steroidal hot pink Asparagus stalks spearing up out of the soil. Remember that this is a big boned gal--do not plant this near any delicate modest lass in your beds as 'Tricolor' will win the battle for space. Do we love it? Of course, we love it.

40272 FICUS CARICA VARIEGATA MOR HH CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Edible Fig" This selection is the traditional famous Japanese clone with striped stems on new growth and initially mottled leaves soon fading to green. Used in Asia as a laxative and as a wart remover; a traditional fruit in most subtropical areas of the world. Not a clone which can be considered reliably winter hardy in our climate--although will reach massive proportions in the deep South. If you expect this to be highly variegated, please do not order--this is an heirloom Japanese cultivar from Japanese collectors. Some customers in hot areas of California cannot get good striping on new stems. If your interests are in a fruit crop, please buy 'Brown Turkey' which we do offer from time to time. Notice the second picture which shows a high color form that we are starting to propagate. It hopefully will be available next year, 2010.
