41796 SACCHARUM OFFICINARUM VIOLACEUM PELE'S SMOKE GRA TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 "Purple Sugar Cane" from Polynesia makes a dramatic pot plant with long elegant purple leaves ranked on the woody segmented maroon canes--long a premire favorite for collectors with a greenhouse desiring the visual design effect of this stunning "Black Magic Repellent Plant." More recently this most handsome clump of dusky purple has won over temperated zone gardners bent on bringing a tropical tone to summer plantins. And indeed, the "Purple leaved Sugar Cane" becomes amazing when brought out into a collection of potted plants on your deck or patio. Various customers plant their ever-thickening clumps directly in their summer display beds, digging these shallow rooted clustered canes in the fall to store in their plant rooms or a corner of the hobbygreenhouse until spring re-planting. Always remember to keep quite moist.

50111 SANCHEZIA NOBILIS GLAUCOPHYLLA NANA ACAN HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Wonderful dwarf form (compartively speaking) of this popular gold-patterned much branching showstopping plant. Red reduced bracts with yellow fls in terminal spikes. The better choice of the Sanchezia for outside container performance as well as houseplant adaptability; the following "Golden Zebra" is far more dramatic in sheer scale as well as more dramatic in the winter greenhouse blossom sweepstakes.

50065 SANCHEZIA SPECIOSA [NOBILIS CULTIVAR?] ACAN TGH HPPRICE: $ 6.00 Handsome glossy leaves with striking wide lemon veins outlined in mustard ; yellow and shrimp red flower spikes--this scarce species form from Clyde Reed is very dramatic as a large accent in outdoor summer plantings as well as in the sweepstakes for the winter conservatory flowering razzle dazzle awards. Sorry, none will be available until Fall '08 due to overdemand last season.

Very showy although quite leggy if left on its own; so prune for the shape you desire or allow this exotic Acanthus to achieve the proportions of the standard (staking would be helpful) for which it is genetically programed. Nonetheless, for the consistent pruners among you, this can easily be kept in perfect proportions for the Wardian case where it adds a major velveteen class act.

30542 SCINDAPSIS EXOTICA [SPECIES] ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 22.00 Newly offered from the new robust clone; this looks just like the slower growing clone we have had for years. Possibly because of meristeming, this clone grows robustly and has all the same earmarks of the original plant. Order this at the new lower price. Leathery wide lance leaves of glossy grey green, nearly obscured with bright aluminum grey. Remarkable and beautiful "Exotic Pothos" neither a Pothos, nor Raphiodophora Exotica.

11412 SELAGINELLA KRAUSSIANA AUREA SEL TGH TERR PRICE: $ 4.00 "Golden Clubmoss" Short arching stems form bright mat; essential in any terrarium to brighten the design.

11453 SELAGINELLA KRAUSSIANA BROWNII SEL TERR HP PRICE: $ 7.25 "Emerald Isle" or (although native to S. Africa) "Scotch Moss." Very compact, much branched stems eventually creating tiny cushions--excellent for extremely small terariums. Merely fabulous--but site it so it will not be swamped by or swallowed up by a more vigorous neighbor. Please, please, please do not expect a large plant when you order this--it starts out tiny and it stays tiny; if you need a larger plant, please order one of its kin.

11624 SELAGINELLA KRAUSIANA GOLD TIPS SEL CGH TERR PRICE: $ 4.50 OFTEN LIMITED AVAILABILITY Fabulous ferny carpet with all new growth tipped bright yellow against the darker mature clubmoss foliage--not as vigorous or as highly colored as 'aurea.'

11427 SELAGINELLA PALLESCENS [EMMELIANA] SEL TERR PRICE: $ 6.50 "Sweat Plant" Fine terrarium plant growing in circular rosette arching vase forms with very fine foliage noted for holding droplets of condensation, thus "sweating"-- Venezuela, Z10. Very similar habit to moellendorfii, but much slower growing and a touch more basil green in coloration.

11472 SELAGINELLA PLANA SEL TERR TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Strong erect stems hold bright branched fans of shimmery foliage. Very distinctive beautiful "Spikemoss Cypress" species achieving more dramatic height than most of the tropical "Clubmosses." Certainly not "creepy." Unmatched for giving an exceptionally elegant vertical effect in a wardian case or larger terrarium; but remember that this is very tropical and thus, unlike various Selaginella species offered here, is not tolerant of chill.

11414 SELAGINELLA POSADA #15 [SPECIES] SEL HP TERR PRICE: $ 6.50 LIMITED AVAILABILITY Curly-fingered "fronds" intermingle into sea-green tostled carpets; uniquely colored unidentified Central American coming to us from the collection at Kew Gardens.

41469 SENECIO CONFUSUS [PSEUDOGYNOXIS CHENOPODIDIO] COMP CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.50 "Mexican Flame Vine" Modest shrubby vine with fleshy toothed leaves turning purplish in the winter to accent the many showy arching clusters of extremely showy orange rayed daisy flowers. Victorian favorite. Some customers claim to bloom this in outdoor summer containers; but blooms most reliably for us in midwinter when such brazenly colored daisies are desperately needed.

41904SENECIO MACROGLOSSUS MEDIO-PICTUS COM CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 Beautiful "Golden Cape/Natal Ivy" is a selection of this decoratively lobed heavy-substanced "Wax Ivy" with a golden ocher flame down each succulent leaf; Yellow ray flowers reveal it to be a daisy family member, perfect in the cool conservatory.

41905 SENECIO MACROGLOSSUS VARIEGATUS COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 8.00 "Ivory Cape Ivy" or "Turtle Ivy" The Waxy lobed leaves are margined bright cream-ivory; showy heads of yellow daisy flowers are produced at the tips of the vines late winter. Not a strong grower during the summer--we prefer to ship this during the cooler part of the fall as the leaves tend to become mush if shipped during warm periods.

41471 SENECIO MIKANIOIDES [DELAIREA ODORATA] COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.25 "German Ivy" or "Parlor Ivy" Glossy angled bright green leaves on succulent stems. South African species remaining quite popular as it tolerates a range of conditions. As likely to tumble from a windowbox in today's designs (especially as grows at least three times as fast as true Hedera ivies), as from the ornate urns in Nineteenth Century gardens--but always among the most popular of houseplants. Some plants are never out of fashion (even though their latin names morph into tonguetwisters).

60888 SENECIO PLEISTOCEPHALUS COMP CGH HP PRICE: $5.50 Scandent African shrublet, the "Golden Garland Vine" with broad semi-succulent oval leaves, attractively serrated; tiny bright yellow flowers in astoundingly large masses mid winter in the greenhouse. Fanciers of succulents are drawn to this for its gradually expanding woody base (caudex): by the way, many succulent leaved, and fat stemmed, and caudiform species of Senecio are offered in the SUCCULENTS section of this website. Click Here to go directly to the succulent Senecio listings and take a gander at some very fat dasies.

41472 SENECIO SCANDENS VIVIAN PERRY COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Another "German Ivy"; but actually a ray-flowered Asian species with angled holly like leaves somewhat elongately triangular. This attractive "Charlatan Ivy" produces showy heads of sulphur-yellow daisy flowers typically around Christmas followed by tiny dandelion seed heads; effectively displayed in a hanging baskets year round.

40917 SERISSA FOETIDA FLORAPLENA RUB HP CGH PRICE: $5.75 Miniature-statured woody shrub with interlacing twigs bear tiny glossy green leaves in pert pairs and cute double white flowers tucked along the stems. The "Double flowered Snow Rose" much valued as the bonsai "Kochok" because with time it gradually takes on the character of aged trees. Quite a treat when in bloom.

42136 SERISSA FOETIDA PINK FAIRY RUB HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 Hansoti #18. Marvelous compact selection with distinctly fastigate habit and reduced leaves; lovely pink blossoms. Very vigorous selection good in a sunny window. Also successful trained as a staked standard, achieving an appearance similar to that of a staked Myrtus.

40920 SERISSA FOETIDA VARIEGATA PINK SWAN RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Wide magenta-pink tubular fls perfect against margined leaves. This pink flowered clone may be identical to S. `Tancho' & to `Ahiro Pink.' Already a basic for indoor bonsai. Known in Japan as `Tanchio Yatsubusa.'

41801 SERISSA FOETIDA YATSUBUSA-KYOTA RUB HP CGH PRICE: $ 7.75 Very dwarf fastigate twiggy habit with tiny leaves; unique tiny long-tubed white semi-erect flowers with narrow pointed tips. Choice "Kyoto Snow Rose" used in mame bonsai as "Kyoto Kochoki"--this is the difficult one as needs higher humidity than its kith & kin; nonetheless, certainly the most impressive as a bonsai. Please note that these will be extremely small plants when they arrive at your home because this is a miniature form.

20219 SINNINGIA BARBATA GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 "Dutchman's Pipe" Erect stems hold stiff leaves with reddish reverse and odd yellow swollen tubular blossoms fading to parchment white. Brazilian species best grown in lite garden or Wardian case culture--never allow to go totally dormant as with the typical tuberous species, or will enter that dread territory known as terminal dormancy.

20502 SINNINGIA BILL HULL [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 USUALLY LIMITED Marvelous reliable Ted Bona hybrid of S. eumorpha with nodding slipper-shaped impressive white flowers held elegantly above the oval foliage on short stems emerging from the basal bulb (which should not be burried). Easy.

20469 SINNINGIA BRAZEN [HYB] GES HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Our name for an extremely vigorous Ted Bona hybrid of S. reitzii; the erect purplish woody stems produce a multitude of small rosy tubed flowers with flounced overlapping tips of magenta with deep wine-red netting. Very long lived as keeps pilling up new tubers above old ones, making this irresistable to caudex collectors.

20244 SINNINGIA DOUBLE TALK [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Bona hybrid with 'Lavender Queen' habit framing beautiful hose-in-hose lavender bell blossoms with ruffled throat. An heirloom hybrid with a Victorian tone. Best to allow to go completely dormant between annual blooming cycles.

20359 SINNINGIA SELLOVII GES HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 From soft basal foliage mature stems (eventually as tall as three feet) bear many pendant swollen dark salmon pink fls attractive to every passing hummingbird; seed collector Tim Ross recommends full light to encourage spring to fall bloom for this Brazillian native. Various plant friends store the (eventually) considerably sized tuber during the winter with other tropical bulbs, then plant out directly into their garden beds (sunny spots are best, with rich well drained soil--anywhere glads and dahlias thrive) for an astounding summer display--few visitors to their gardens can even begin to guess what the succulent leaved Gesneriad with an attentant vigilant hummingbird might possibly be (they'll never guess Gesneriad, alone Sinningia)! Since I characteristically neglect to dig most tropical bulbs & tubers, I keep my oldest tubers (some now 15 years old) in giant 15" baskets where they are essentially evergreen.

20260 SINNINGIA TANTE [HYB] GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Long cascading stems with soft leaves and many magenta tubular blossoms--a unique Bona hybrid for large hanging basket. The leaf & stems character is petite, however, the eventual outline is substantial.

20230 SINNINGIA TUBIFLORA GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Tall stems with small scalloped leaves tipped with fragrant white tubed blossoms with flared lobes. Unusual chill tolerant type grown as an outdoor plant in southern California (but tubers must be considerably below frost line in perfectly drained soil). Rather too leggy to be an attractive houseplant--and the dormancy cycles can be a challenge.

57486 SOLANDRA BRACHYCALYX [HORT] SOL TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Costa Rican Chalice Vine" Smaller statured than nitida --Long whitish yellow trumpets ripen to rich buttery yellow with reddish violet stripes in bright light, usually peaking midwinter. Glossy vibrant foliage attractive all year.

40922 SOLANDRA MAXIMA [NITIDA] SOL TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 "Golden Chalice Vine" Enormous nine inch long yellow cupped trumpet flowers with five purple lines; on stout stems--a Mexican native essential for conservatory or porch garden. Various plant friends lug a tub of this substantial shrub (vining only when so encouraged) into their winter plantrooms for an amazing stunning early winter floral display. Horticulturally the opposite of "subtle."

54110 SOLANDRA MAXIMA VARIEGATA [WARRIMOO?] SOL TGH CGH HP PRICE: $ 15.00Amazing selection of the "Golden Chalice Vine" with new pink to liver lilac toned foliage emerging with buttery cream margins, gradually hardening to bright ivory. 40923 SOLANUM CAPSICASTRUM VARIEGATUM SOL CGH HP PRICE: $ 6.50 "Variegated Jerusalem Cherry" Famous Christmas shrub with bright orange tomato berries which start as green striped white marbles strikingly posed above the thick white-margined, soft leaves--difficult to achieve, but what a knockout. Remember that this is not a good plant around children, as the temptingly attractive fruit is not edible, and considered slightly toxic in the Little Golden Book of Old Wife's Plant Tales. This must have full sun at all stages of growth to perform well.

54109 SOLANUM JASMINOIDES ALBUM VARIEGATUM SOL CGH HP PRICE: $ 3.50 Handsome "Variegated Nightshade Jasmine" with each fingered lf of butter yellow accented with a central green & ochre flame; clusters of yellow beaked white flowers. A vining shrub lovely trained on a small wreath or allowed to trail down from a container.

54052 SOLANUM QUITOENSE SOL CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Apricot Tomato" sharply lobed leaves with electric purple veins and thick hair; small fall fls followed by showy winter (greenhouse) orange fruit with the taste of apricot used in preserves. Showy winter conservatory plant; great in late summer containers. The stunning purple hues appear with the onset of cool nights in the fall as the blossoms appear; with some insect assistance the plums set just in time to be brought into the sunny greenhouse (before the first frost) to begin harvesting for your marmalades. Sometimes in limited numbers; we prefer not to ship this in early spring as its big show starts in the fall AFTER the intensity of late spring & summer. In fact, this is so outsized and unfriendly (to human hands) that we prefer not to ship it at all.

54579 SOLANUM [LYCIANTHES] RANTONNETII SOL CGH PRICE: $ 5.25 The Paraguayan "Blue Potato Tree" actually a strong vine, best staked as a standard, producing blue-violet fls all year (then red berries) when grown warm; deciduous if cool in winter. Totally charming plant in foliage and in flower.

42230 SOLANUM SEAFORTHIANUM SOL CGH PRICE: $ 5.25 Vigorous "Brazilian Nightshade" vine with lacy pinnate leaves; bright purple-blue starry fls followed by pea-sized red berries. Check for availability before ordering as this is typically only seasonally (in fall) stocked.

42000 SPARMANNIA AFRICANA TIL HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Traditional "Indoor Linden" still popular as the "Zimmerlinden" because it is a survivor. Woody stems support light green attractively haired leaves; winter clusters of white flowers with puffy yellow stamens (with purple tips) which move when touched appear in great numbers. (After which you might consider that some serious pruning is necessary because this is truely a vigorous critter). A source of hemp in native Africa where it grows in moist gulleys in the Cape Province.

30403 SPATHICARPA SAGITTIFOLIA ARAC HP PRICE: $ 10.00 "Caterpillar Flower" Low growing mounds of soft arrowhead leaves with very unusual flowers of curved lime green slim rolled spathe with a fused "caterpillar-like" spadix of bug green. Easy small-statured houseplant from Argentina. Receiving much new attention as a star in Wardian Case designs.
